Question on Cell Phones+Satellite phones...?

Tricia Dossous: Satellite phones work almost anywhere as long as you are outside. For example if you are on a private sailing vessel in the middle of the Indian Ocean a satellite phone will still work. Cell phones only work near a location that contains a set of equipment that is using the frequency range associated with the cell phone.Cell phone equipment can be set up to provide coverage inside a metal building. Satellite phones can be blocked by metal in buildings since the signal needs to reach the satellite.I believe that there are phones that utilize the signal that is the most available including Wi/Fi so the distinction may not cover all the possible options.Historically satellite phones have been more expensive....Show more

Antonia Mogg: Cell phones connect to towers, from there the signal goes to a center from where it is usually transmitted through a satellite. (of course depending on where the called party is. if he`s near you there will be no satellite! s used, but he`s in another country, or in another part of the country satellite communication will also be used. There are some portable phones that connect directly to satellites (ex. Thuraya) but these are bigger and much more expensive.
