Marcelle Vanlith: Nowadays English is an important tool if you want to succeed in life. We see that a lot of people are taking English courses and they do not even know the basic things. And that is because our primary education does not provide students a good base in English.But what can we expect? If we read in the newspaper that a big percentage of students are having trouble with Spanish grammar and they do not know how to write in a correct way, that is incredible, considering that Spanish is our native language. And we do not see that just in kids, it is also prevalent in university students and even professionals. Society, media and Ministerio de Educación (do you want that left in Spanish?) are asking for bilingual people; people who can speak English. They say that is obligatory and they do not see, or they do not want to see, that there is a big problem in our education program. If you have the chance to read it, you can see that is a shallow and a poor docume! nt. I think that before trying to improve English in Costa Rica we have to improve what we are supposed to know.Another flaw that we have is the way English is taught in schools. Usually the system is very boring and methodic and that is a very old or outdated way to teach. And we have to consider that we are teaching kids and they need attention grabbers, especially if we are teaching another language it has to be dynamic, interesting and kind of exciting.
